The new trailer for Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 looks amazing. A vast improvement over the initial teaser trailer. Some die-hard Ghost fans may still be disappointed in the new direction with the 3D CGI style, but the anime series is likely to win a new generation of fans when it arrives on Netflix in April.
Besides a new look, the story for the series is likely to be stellar as it’s co-directed by two talented anime directors: Kenji Kamiyama (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex) and Shinji Aramaki (Appleseed).
Since Netflix first announced the Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 series in 2018, fans have been praying to the anime gods for a great (or at least watchable) show, unlike the abomination Ghost in the Shell film starring Scarlett Johansson. We don’t blame Scarlett for how badly the movie turned out, although she should have had the good sense to turn down the role.
Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 promises a solid restart for the franchise, which includes manga, games, films, and, of course, anime. For those not familiar with Ghost yet, here’s a quick primer.
Set in the mid-21st Century, a quasi-governmental counter-terrorism organization (Public Security Section 9) deals with threats against Japan. A taskforce, led by cyborg Major Motoko Kusanagi, is comprised of various specialists who utilize advanced technology to engage in unique operations against foreign powers, cyber-terrorists, and corrupt individuals in powerful positions in government and the private sector.
The core theme of the franchise is deciphering what it means to be human in a society where most individuals have been enhanced with cybernetics including complete transfers of brains into cyborg bodies. Ghost in the Shell is both a fascinating and frightening peek at the future.
