Mega Evolution Coming to Pokémon Go!

Pokémon Go keeps getting better and better. Niantic really upped their game in 2020 with the launch of the Battle League, and then finding creative solutions for trainers to keep hunting during the COVID lockdown like remote raids, decreased hatch distances for eggs, and increased spawn rates.

The news was announced during the latest Pokémon Presents on June 17, featuring Pokémon Company President and CEO Tsunekazu Ishihara. About midway during the presentation, a teaser trailer showed a brief promo of the new feature ending with the Mega Evolution sigil.

Ishihara explained, “We’re working to deliver a new take on Mega Evolution that is enhanced by Pokémon GO’s unique gameplay. I hope you look forward to meeting Mega-Evolved pokémon.”

Mega Evolution was introduced in Pokémon X and Y. The temporary evolution can be used in battle on certain Pokémon like Charizard, Gengar, Gyarados, and Blaziken. To initiate a Mega Evolution, a Mega Stone is needed. As Ishihara hinted, the Mega Evolution function in Pokémon Go is likely to be a bit different.
