Star Wars Episode IX Canceled Script Gets Animated

The leaked script for Star Wars Episode IX, whether real or fake, would have given us a darker film than the fan-service heavy movie that J.J. Abrams threw together. Don’t get us wrong. We appreciated the endcap to the Skywalker saga, but it was full of loose story threads and way too much going on.

Now, thanks to YouTube channel Mr Sunday Movies, we get a glimpse of what could have been. A six-minute animated video cleverly delivers the synopsis from the leaked script—hitting all the major highlights. Sure, the animation is cute and dialogue funny, but it does a great job capturing the darker and more cohesive story than the J.J. Abrams film.

LEAKED SCRIPT

If for some reason you hadn’t heard, a leaked script supposedly written by Colin Trevorrow popped onto the internet in February. Trevorrow was hired to write and direct Episode IX before Disney kicked him to the curb. We’re guessing Disney wanted more of a Pretty Woman ending to the Skywalker saga. Which is ironic because Pretty Woman was supposed to be a darker movie before Disney got hold of it and turned it into a romantic film.

This is not the first time Disney kicked directors out of their chairs because the House of Mouse didn’t like the direction a Star Wars movie was going. Phil Lord and Chris Miller were hired to direct Solo: A Star Wars Story, but were fired during filming due to creative differences with Disney. Considering their excellent work on the Lego movies and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, it would have been interesting to see how their version of Solo turned out.

CONCEPT ART

The animated short titled “The Cancelled STAR WARS Episode 9 Animated” also uses original concept art for Star Wars Episode IX as a reference. The Star Wars Episode IX concept art tracks closely with the plot of the (supposed) Trevorrow’s script giving it more authenticity. The script itself is of superb writing quality, so it’s doubtful this was just some prank.

Sadly, Star Wars: Duel of the Fates will never be made, but at least we got a script, concept art, and this animated video. This may be the best fan fiction ever.
