Warner Bros. must really like what they’re seeing in Matt Reeves’ The Batman movie currently in production. The movie isn’t being released until October 2021, but Warner Bros. already gave the green light to expanding on Reeves’ version of Batman with a drama focusing on the Gotham City police department.
The new police drama series on HBO Max will build on the movie’s world building of the criminal underworld in Gotham City.
“This is an amazing opportunity, not only to expand the vision of the world I am creating in the film, but to explore it in the kind of depth and detail that only a longform format can afford — and getting to work with the incredibly talented Terence Winter, who has written so insightfully and powerfully about worlds of crime and corruption, is an absolute dream,” said Matt Reeves.
Reeves signed a deal with Warner Bros. TV to develop multiple projects, with the Gotham PD show being the first to be announced. The untitled DC drama is being produced by Reeves’ production company 6th & Idaho Motion Picture Company, along with the creator of HBO’s Boardwalk Empire, Terence Winter, and The Batmanproducer Dylan Clark.
“We are so fortunate to have such great partners in Matt, Dylan, and Terry and unprecedented access to a wealth of IP from our partners at Warner Bros. and DC,” said Sarah Aubrey, Head of Original Content at HBO Max.
Reeves co-wrote and directed War for the Planet of the Apes, wrote and directed Let Me In, and directed Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and Cloverfield.
We’re not fans of how DC has handled the Dark Knight with actors walking through a turnstile to play the role and then get replaced. We’re hoping Reeves’ The Batman is a solid reboot (with Robert Pattinson) that establishes a consistent world to build off of. The news of the HBO Max spinoff looks like Warner Bros. has the same hopes.
