Review: Westworld Season 3 is Sleek, Scary Future

HBO’s Westworld Season 3 premiere feels less like a continuation of a story, than a newer version of a digital device. Sure, all the functions you expect are there, but it feels new. And there are new functions you didn’t know you needed, and you’ll find you can’t live without.

It’s a shiny new world and Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) is no longer anyone’s plaything. She is her own master. In fact, she is the singularity. Dolores relishes that humans have infused technology into every facet of their lives. She has the technical advantage since she can control her targets’ security systems, bank accounts, vehicles, and anything else connected to the Internet.

Set in the 2050s, everything is connected, so Dolores can do anything from easily stealing what looks to be an Apple version of Shotaro Kaneda’s cycle from Akira, or acquiring a posh apartment in about 15 seconds. She is a robot goddess in human form, and she has a plan.

Poor Bernard (Jeffrey Wright) doesn’t have it so well. He’s on the run since he’s been set up as the fall guy for the bloody robot uprising at Westworld. It’s unclear who set him up at this point, but the robot Charlotte (Tessa Thompson) in her new role as acting CEO of Delos, assures company officers that once Bernard is brought to justice, the company can get back to business.

Maeve (Thandie Newton) also puts in an appearance, but her role in the premiere episode of Westworld Season 3 is minor.

The character who gets the most screen time besides Delores is newcomer Caleb Nichols (Aaron Paul). Caleb is a down-on-his-luck, ex-military guy just trying to make ends meet through a combination of construction work and doing criminal odd jobs through an app.

This app is one of the most interesting elements of Episode 1. It’s essentially a combination of Tinder and Lyft, but for committing crimes. The app is a crime-sharing app that allows petty criminals to work efficiently on scores. Talk about organized crime.

By the end of the episode, Caleb’s criminal side-job brings him in contact with Dolores at a point when she needs a helping hand. It will be interesting to see how Caleb and Dolores work together—both for her plans and in relationship dynamics. Caleb has nothing and Dolores has everything.

I believe Westworld Season 3 will show that Caleb possesses more value than he knows and will be vital to Dolores’ plan. Or maybe Dolores will just keep him as a pet human. There are worse things I suppose.
