Henry Cavill Really, Really Likes the Witcher’s Swords

Henry Cavill is a geek. The actor, with chiseled cheeks and jawline, the best hair, and a physique that is beyond most mortal men, is a dyed-in-the-wool geek. He prefers to play video games and read fantasy novels than go out for a night on the town. Now, having played both the “Man of Steel” and Geralt of Rivia in Netflix’s The Witcher series, he gets to geek out professionally.

Case in point, Cavill recently filmed a video for Netflix in which he explains in detail about the Witcher’s swords. Cavill clarifies which sword is for killing people and which is for slaying monsters.

The Witcher’s human-killing sword is forged of strong steel made from a meteorite. The Witcher had Renfri’s brooch welded to the hilt as a reinforcing symbol of his belief to stay out of the affairs of humans.

The monster-killing sword is made of silver. Since silver is malleable, it doesn’t make sense to get it all dinged up slicing up humans when a steel sword will do the job. When it comes to fighting magical monsters, however, a silver sword will inflict more damage. Henry Cavill says the silver sword stays on his horse, Roach, until needed. Fighting a monster takes some planning because you don’t want to bring a steel sword to a monster fight, of course.

He goes on to explain the swords have no special powers in themselves. It’s the training that Witchers receive that turns the swords into efficient killing tools.

I’ll stop there and let you watch the video to get more reveals from Cavill himself. He clearly enjoys talking about the Witcher’s swords and provides loads of inside details on how various materials and designs were used to make the fight scenes more realistic.
