This week Sony released images and details about the new controller for the upcoming PlayStation 5 coming out in late 2020. Sony hasn’t revealed much about the next generation of their popular gaming console, but we learned a lot about the PS5 controller. And it’s amazing.
The new controller is called the DualSense and is being shipped to game developers so they can incorporate the new features into upcoming games. The biggest feature is haptic feedback. Sony said they are keeping the best features of the classic DualShock controller, while building in new features to improve game play.
The DualSense controllers will be able to relay more feedback to players to increase immersion in games. Sony said the DualSense controllers will convey sensations like “the slow grittiness of driving a car through mud.” The triggers will be adaptive to actions so players will be able to feel tension such as drawing back a bow.
Sony worked to overcome the challenge of increasing the weight and size of the controllers while adding new hardware to support the DualSense experience. Their engineers tweaked the controller exterior including changing the angle of triggers and making small modifications to the shape of the grips.
The PS5 DualSense controller evolved the DualShock’s “Share” button into the “Create” button, which brings additional functionality to sharing content. Sony didn’t say what exactly the new features will be.
A NEW WAY TO CHAT
Another new feature will be very handy for jumping into quick games or if your headset suddenly dies. DualSense controllers will come with a built-in microphone array to allow chat without the need for a headset.
Speaking of headsets, Sony is not ditching the audio jack in favor of wireless headsets. So you can still use your favorite wired headset if that’s your thing.
A small change to the controllers will be a big deal with gamers. The DualSense controllers will now have a USB-C charging port, which will charge the controllers quicker than the micro USB port on the PS4 DualShock controller.
A BRAND NEW LOOK
The previous versions of PlayStation controllers have always had a one solid color: black. As you can see in the photos, the DualSense base controller comes in a black and white scheme. It has a clean look without the banality of an all black controller. The new controller looks like a device one might use in a video game.
There’s still so much we don’t know about the next generation of PlayStation consoles, but if the controller is any indication, the PS5 will set the new standard for next gen consoles.
