Netflix ordered up a new anime series featuring the king of kaiju titled Godzilla Singular Point. Netflix announced the news in early October and they just dropped the first teaser trailer. From the little we see in the trailer it appears this Godzilla anime will be more character driven than monster driven.
Godzilla Singular Point features new characters in the form of a group of young scientists led by Mei Kamino (a female researcher) and Yun Arikawa (a male engineer). Mei and Yun work with their companions to deal with the plague of kaiju.
From the trailer, we get a glimpse of classic Godzilla monsters including Rodan, Anguirus, Jet Jaguar, and possible Titanosaurus, as speculated by some kaiju fans. The most interesting monster reveal is Gabara, an amphibian kaiju who first appeared in All Monsters Attack. It appears Godzilla Singular Point will be drawing kaiju from Japan’s Showa Era, marking the reign of Emperor Hirohito from 1926 to 1989.
GODZILLA ANIME TEAM-UP
Acclaimed anime studio bones (My Hero Academia, Fullmetal Alchemist, Soul Eater) and studio Orange (Land of the Lustrous, Beastars) will team up to animate the series. The anime will be a mix of hand-drawn and CD animation, presumably bones will handle the traditional work with Orange providing the CG visuals.
Storied Japanese studio Toho will produce, as they’ve done with other Godzilla anime on Netflix. Atsushi Takahashi will direct, Kan Sawada will compose the music, and Japanese science-fiction novelist Toh Enjoe will serve as editor and writer for the series. Kazue Kato, creator of Blue Exorcist, will handle character designs, and animator Eiji Yamamori will design the kaiju.
Netflix has had good success with other Godzilla anime including Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters, Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle, and Godzilla: The Planet Eater.
From the amount of media coverage and social media buzz, Godzilla Singular Point looks like something to look forward to when it débuts on Tokyo MX and Netflix in April 2021. The series will consist of 13 episodes.
