K-pop Stans Flood ‘White Lives Matter’ Hashtag to Own Racists

As social justice protests continue in cities across the United States and around the world, a grassroots movement for a #BlackoutTuesday created a massive social media movement to show solidarity with the black community. White supremacists, however, were offended and decided to run their own #whitelivesmatter grassroots campaign on social media. The K-pop community was not going to let that slide.

K-pop stans flooded social media with posts with the #whitelivesmatter hashtag and other racist hashtags. Instead of racist content, the fans offered confused racists K-pop memes and videos of popular K-pop bands like BTS, GOT7, BLACKPINK, Monsta X, and NCT. Hopefully, some of the individuals who came for racist content got caught up in the positive message of K-pop.

You just don’t mess with the K-pop community. Their fans number in the tens of thousands on social media and are highly coordinated. Last yet, K-pop stans posted more than six billion, yes BILLION, tweets. That’s about 3% of total tweets worldwide in 2019.

By Wednesday, #whitelivesmatter and other racist hashtags were trending in the top 10 hashtags on Twitter, but the content was decidedly not racist content. Instead people looking for racist posts got a whole lot of K-pop goodness.

K-pop super group BTS got in on the action tweeting: “We stand against racial discrimination. We condemn violence. You, I and we all have the right to be respected. We will stand together. #BlackLivesMatter”

Rapper Jay Park also tweeted his support for Black Lives Matter. He even announced a donation of $10,000 to the Black Lives Matter campaign.

K-pop stans even went as far to spam the Dallas Police Department’s app for reporting on protests. The police app went down as thousands of K-pop fans flooded it with fancams. Then K-pop stans started flooding the Dallas Police Department’s Twitter page with even more K-pop content.
