The Umbrella Academy freaks are going back to school for a third season. Netflix just announced it has renewed the tragic family of superheroes for another season. Filming kicks off in Toronto in February 2021.
All the primary cast members are coming back including Aidan Gallagher (Five), Ellen Page (Vanya), Tom Hopper (Luther), David Castañeda (Diego), Emmy Raver-Lampman (Allison), Robert Sheehan (Klaus), and Colm Feore (Sir Reginald Hargreeves). Ritu Arya returns as Lila Pitts, a Season 2 favorite as Diego’s love interest and wild card.
The most interesting returning cast member is Justin H. Min, who plays Ben. He was already dead at the beginning of Season 1 but continued haunting and harrassing Klaus through two seasons. However, Ben was disapparated into the afterlife being overwhelmed by Vanya’s psychic blasts near the end of Season 2. In the last scene of Season 2, the crew returns to the present to find they’re in an alternate timeline where Reginald created a different group of heroes with a much-alive Ben.
TV show creator Steve Blackman is back as showrunner.
NOT JUST ANOTHER SUPERHERO SERIES
The Umbrella Academy is based on the Dark Horse comic book series created and written by Gerard Way with illustration by Gabriel Bá. Blackman adapted the dark superhero series’ for Netflix, along with Jeremy Slater. The first season was the third-most watched series on Netflix in 2019.
Season 2 received an even better reception with positive reviews acknowledging improved storytelling over Season 1. The Umbrella Academy’s second season scored a 90% Rotten Tomatoes score, a solid improvement over the first season’s 75% Rotten Tomatoes rating.
WHAT CAN WE EXPECT IN SEASON 3?
As mentioned above, the team returns to the present, having foiled World War 3 by correcting the timeline related to Kennedy’s assassination in the 1960s. They arrive back at the location of the Umbrella Academy only to find it’s now the Sparrow Academy and Reginald is still alive despite offing himself in Season 1. The Sparrow Academy is made up of five different children with special powers, including Ben (now with an emo haircut), as well as a floating green cube.
There are plenty of theories floating around the internet regarding Ben, the floating cube, Reginald, and more. However, there is no official word on the plot of Season 3. Way announced in July 2020, that he was working on the Vol. 4 of the comic book series. The title of the fourth comic book installment appears to coincide with the plot line of Season 3 as it titled The Umbrella Academy: Sparrow Academy. No release date has been set for the upcoming comic book installment or the Netflix series.
