Netflix announced a new anime film of The Witcher is coming to the streaming service. Titled The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, the film “will take us back to a new threat facing the Continent,” as Netflix confirmed via Twitter.
The Witcher anime film will be produced by the South Korean animation company Studio Mir, the same studio that gave us The Legend of Korra and Voltron: Legendary Defender. No details on the expected date for the show yet.
Witcher fans will be happy to know that Netflix series showrunner Lauren Hissrich and writer Beau DeMayo will be the team heading the anime film.
The news of a possible animated series for The Witcher was first discovered in a new listing with the Writers Guild of America, stating that DeMayo was writing a project titled The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf.
THE WITCHER IS MOST WATCHED NETFLIX SERIES
According to Netflix’s 2019 fourth quarter earnings report, the company says The Witcher is the biggest season one series in their history. Their metrics show that 76 million households watched the series during its first four weeks on Netflix. They also pointed out The Witcher series was so popular it drove up sales for the fantasy franchise’s books and video games.
Note that Netflix’s results are based on their metrics showing those 76 million households watched at least two minutes of an episode. We’re not sure why Netflix changed from their original metric of a household watching at least 70 percent of an episode. It may simply be their way to gin up their results as they battle for dominance in the “Great Streaming War.”
THE WITCHER SOUNDTRACK IS COMING!
Netflix’s shareholder letter even referenced the popularity of the hit song from the series, “Toss a Coin to Your Witcher.” Jaskier would be pleased.
BTW, the song is now available to stream on Apple Music and Spotify. The full album will be released on January 24. As we previously reported, Netflix dropped the ball on releasing the album with the series.
WHEN IS SEASON 2 COMING?
Netflix renewed The Witcher even before the series dropped. Production on Season 2 will begin in London soon, according to Variety. The season will have eight episodes. The actors playing the three main characters will return with Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia, Anya Chalotra as Yennefer, and Freya Allan as Ciri.
