Disney+ will stream the new Simpsons short film “Playdate with Destiny” on April 10. The short film focuses on Maggie Simpson’s crush on a boy named Hudson, who she meets on a playdate in a park.
The short film was attached to Disney/Pixar’s Onward, but not a lot of people saw it in theaters due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus. Onward only grossed $104 million worldwide. A tiny sum compared to typical Disney/Pixar theatrical releases.
Disney only announced this morning via their Disney+ Instagram account that “Playdate with Destiny” would premiere on their streaming service on Friday.
The last (and only other) Simpsons short film was “The Longest Daycare” was released in 2012 and ran before the 20th Century Fox film Ice Age: Continental Drift. “The Longest Daycare” was nominated for an Academy Award, but lost to Disney’s animated short “Paperman.” This is ironic now that The Simpsons is part of Disney.
Despite The Simpsons now being a Disney-owned property, the same old Simpsons gang is running the show. Long-time Simpsons director David Silverman directs the short. “Playdate with Destiny” was written by Al Jean, James L. Brooks, Tom Gammill and Max Pross, Matt Selman, Michael Price, and of course, Matt Groening.
