A new Star Trek series titled Star Trek: Strange New Worlds was announced today by CBS All Access. The new show will feature the return of Anson Mount as Captain Pike, Rebecca Romijn as Number One, and Ethan Peck as Spock. The trio had roles in the second season of Star Trek: Discovery.
“Fans fell in love with Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn and Ethan Peck’s portrayals of these iconic characters when they were first introduced on Star Trek: Discovery last season,” said Julie McNamara, Executive Vice President and Head of Programming for CBS All Access. “This new series will be a perfect complement to the franchise, bringing a whole new perspective and series of adventures to Star Trek.”
The new Star Trek series will follow the adventures of the U.S.S Enterprise with Captain Pike at the helm a decade before Captain Kirk assumes command of NCC-1701. No release date was announced, but we know the series premiere was written by Akiva Goldsman. Goldsman, Kurtzman and Lumet will serve as executive producers for the series along with Henry Alonso Myers, Heather Kadin, Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth.
Goldsman will remain an executive producer and part of the creative team on Star Trek: Picard. The new Star Trek series will be produced by CBS Television Studios, Secret Hideout, and Roddenberry Entertainment.
A DREAM COME TRUE
“This is a dream come true, literally,” said Goldsman. “I have imagined myself on the bridge of the Enterprise since the early 1970s. I’m honored to be a part of this continuing journey along with Alex, Henry and the fine folks at CBS.”
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is the latest series to join the Star Trek franchise on CBS All Access. Star Trek: Discovery is returning for Season 3 later this year. Star Trek: Picard is expected to return for a second season in 2021, but the COVID pandemic will likely push the original target date back.
The animated comedy series Star Trek: Lower Decks will drop on CBS All Access later this year. It is written by Mike McMahan, who served as writer and producer on Rick and Morty.
Two more new Star Trek series are in development. The first being an untitled series about Section 31 starring Michelle Yeoh. The second is an animated and yet untitled Star Trek series written for younger audiences that will be broadcast on Nickelodeon.
TOO MUCH STAR TREK? (NEVER)
Whether all these shows will cause Star Trek fatigue is yet to be seen, but we’re more than willing to be test subjects. The crew of Warp Gate News is very excited for the return of Anson Mount as Captain Pike, Ethan Peck as Spock and Rebecca Romijn as Number One. Strange New Worlds, here we come.
