The Batman Continues Filming Despite COVID Lockdown in UK

The next Batman movie starring Robert Pattinson will not break from filming despite a nationwide lockdown due to skyrocketing COVID rates in the United Kingdom. The Batman is currently being shot in Chicago and the Liverpool, England.

Warner Bros. had originally scheduled The Batman for theatrical release on June 25, 2021, but pushed the début to Oct. 1, 2021 due to early production delays. Then production halted in the early days of the pandemic before starting up again. However, the production had to be stopped yet again when Robert Pattinson tested positive for COVID.

The studio eventually set a release date on March 4, 2022, and they seem hellbent to keep it after all the delays so far. Warner Bros. won’t be breaking pandemic restrictions, however. Britain’s Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden confirmed that film and television production may continue along with professional sports (without fans in attendance).

The Batman filming was already operating under quarantine restrictions because Liverpool was in a regional lockdown. Film production was still allowed by local authorities.

WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM PATTINSON’S BATMAN?

The premise of the next film is that Batman/Bruce Wayne begins digging into the deep corruption in Gotham City in his early years as the Bat. He finds that some of the corruption might tie back to his family.

Colin Farrell will make his debut as the Penguin. The Riddler (played by Paul Dano) will join him as one of the baddies. And while he may still have great riddles, he is a serial killer, so that’s kind of dark. Selina Kyle/Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz) also pounces back to the big screen.

We expect a grittier, grounded Batman this time around. Especially since this film is not attached to the DCEU, the story is clearly focused on Batman’s history as a detective instead of over-powered fighter of alien superheroes.

The plan by Warner Bros. is for The Batman to be the first in a trilogy of films. And a spin-off series was already announced for HBO Max. Warner Bros. gave the green light for expanding Reeves’ version of Batman a police-procedural drama focusing on the Gotham City police department.
