The Sandman graphic novel series by Neil Gaiman is being adapted to an audiobook with a stellar cast. Gaiman just announced the impressive list of actors for the roles. The Sandman audiobook will feature James McAvoy was cast as title character Morpheus, Kat Dennings as Death, Michael Sheen as Lucifer, Taron Egerton as John Constantine, Riz Ahmed as the Corinthian, Andy Serkis as Matthew the Raven, and many others.
Neil Gaiman is a major part of the production—serving as narrator, creative director, and executive producer. Dirk Maggs is co-executive producer, scriptwriter, and director. Maggs has worked with Gaiman on audiobook adaptations of Neverwhere, Stardust, Good Omens, and Anansi Boys. He also oversaw audiobook adaptations of the Audible Originals Alien: River Of Pain and X-Files, as well as DC audio productions for The Trial of Superman, Superman: To Doomsday & Beyond, and Batman: Knightfall.
Here’s what Gaiman had to say about partnering with Maggs on The Sandman audiobook: “This is a rich audio adaptation of The Sandman Graphic Novels, brilliantly crafted by Dirk Maggs, with an all-star cast. I’ve loved being there to talk casting, there to read the scripts and offer occasional advice, and there in the studios, watching magic get made and recording the narration. I can’t wait until the world hears what we’ve done.”
The first part of The Sandman audiobook series will drop July 15 on Audible.com. Part One will cover volumes 1-3 of the graphic novel series: “Preludes & Nocturnes,” “The Doll’s House,” and “Dream Country.”
Here’s the synopsis provided by Audible:
When The Sandman, also known as Lord Morpheus – the immortal king of dreams, stories and the imagination – is pulled from his realm and imprisoned on Earth by a nefarious cult, he languishes for decades before finally escaping. Once free, he must retrieve the three “tools” that will restore his power and help him to rebuild his dominion, which has deteriorated in his absence. As the multi-threaded story unspools, The Sandman descends into Hell to confront Lucifer (Michael Sheen), chases rogue nightmares who have escaped his realm, and crosses paths with an array of characters from DC comic books, ancient myths, and real-world history, including: Inmates of Gotham City’s Arkham Asylum, Doctor Destiny, the muse Calliope, the three Fates, William Shakespeare (Arthur Darvill), and many more.
It's astonishing. (And this is just the first three books.) So proud to be part of it. You can preorder at https://t.co/5Nsug0Ank3 #TheSandmanaudio @audible_com @DCComics @audibleuk @DirkMaggs pic.twitter.com/wPtrUTfeoP
