The Simpsons Predicted Pandemic and Killer Bugs

We don’t know if someone has the gift of psychic sight on the writing staff of The Simpsons or maybe it’s just that they made so many damn shows over the past 31 years that some plots were bound to happen. Either way, an episode from 1993 hits the nail on the head by predicting both a pandemic flu from Asia and deadly insects.

One of the plots in the episode “Marge in Chains” has Springfield dealing with a pandemic of Osaka Flu, which comes to America via infected workers in a factory packing a kitchen item called a “Juice Loosener” for shipment. Here’s a clip from The Simpsons episode:

Later in The Simpsons episode, Springfieldians gathering outside the home of Dr. Hibbert begging for a cure to the Osaka Flu. Dr. Hibbert tells them “the only cure is bedrest.” The residents don’t like his answer so they tip over a nearby truck to see if a cure could be found inside. However, the truck contains killer bees. Here’s the clip:

MURDER HORNETS, REALLY???

Ok. So these are killer bees and not murder hornets. We always thought killer bees were the apex of winged stinging bugs. But freaking MURDER HORNETS! Apparently the sting from these flying jerks are so painful it feels like a nail being driven into your flesh. A sting from a murder hornet can kill humans if they don’t get treatment soon. And here’s the kicker, the venom of murder hornets (AKA Asian giant hornets) is powerful enough to disintegrate flesh.

What’s next? An invasion of the Wood Beast from Flash Gordon?

The Simpsons didn’t actually predict the coronavirus as some other news outlets and social media accounts are saying. One picture floating around the internet has Springfield’s TV news anchor Kent Brockman sitting in front of a screen that says “Corona Virus.” The original scene showed Brockman with a screen that said “Apocalypse Meow.” Coincidentally, Brockman was speaking about the outbreak of made-up pandemic called “House Cat Flu.”

One of these days we’ll get around making up a list of all The Simpsons predictions that came true.
