It’s official—WandaVision is coming to the Disney+ streaming service in 2020. Disney posted a video to their YouTube channel featuring the upcoming shows for Disney+ this year.
WandaVision was originally scheduled to début in 2021. Disney has not provided an explanation for the change at the time of this article. It’s possible the production of the season will wrap up sooner than expected or perhaps Disney needs to pad their new channel to keep subscribers paying those monthly fees (which we’ll gladly keep paying if Disney keeps putting out amazing shows like The Mandalorian).
Originally, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was to be the only Marvel hero series to hit Disney+ this year. The six-episode series carries on the adventures of Captain America’s BBFs, played by Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was supposed to drop in late 2020, but with the WandaVision news perhaps this schedule will change too. It’s doubtful that Disney would broadcast both Marvel shows too close to each other.
WandaVision, features Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch and Vision, reprising their roles from the MCU films. Not much else is know about the show at this point. Filming began in November 2019, so there will need to be a quick-ish turnaround if the show will appear on Disney+ prior to summer.
Marvel/Disney+ Expected Release Dates
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (Late 2020 or earlier | Filming)
WandaVision (Late 2020 | Filming)
Loki (Early 2021 | Pre-production)
Hawkeye (Late 2021 | Pre-production)
Ms. Marvel (TBD | Ordered)
Moon Knight (TBD | Ordered)
She-Hulk (TBD | Ordered)
Disney+ already dropped Marvel’s Hero Project at launch, which follows young individuals who are making big differences in their respective communities.
Another Marvel show titled What If will début on Disney’s streaming service in mid-2021. The animated series What If creates alternate reality scenarios within the MCU, such as what if Captain America was actually Bucky Barnes. The first season will have 10 episodes. A second season has already been ordered (Disney must like what they’ve seen.) The best news is the MCU cinematic actors are expected to lend their voices to the series.
The bottom line is Disney isn’t taking any chances with their fledgling streaming service. They’re taking a page out of Netflix’s playbook and stacking the deck with so much content that no one better complain there’s nothing to watch. God, at this point, there’s almost too many shows to watch, but somehow we’ll find the time, I’m sure.
