Brilliant! Build-A-Bear Workshop is rolling out Doctor Who bears. No, not all 13 Doctors. Just the Tenth and Thirteenth Doctors. Sorry Matt Smith, Peter Capaldi, and all other living Doctor Who actors. C’mon Build-A-Bear, the Fourth Doctor (Tom Baker) just begs to be made into one of your plushes.
While already available in the UK, the Build-A-Bear Doctor Who line is launching on Friday, February 21 in the United States, according to their website. Their site also states the Time Lord bear gift set is an online exclusive. There’s no indication at this time that the Doctor Who bears will be available in-store at some point.
The BBC partnered with Build-A-Bear on this exclusive plush that comes with two blue hearts (of course) sewn onto the chest, and BBC/Doctor Who branded blue paws. There’s no indication the bears will come with two hearts crammed inside. But they should if they’re going to be biologically correct. If this is an online exclusive only, then it doesn’t really matter as we’ll miss the experiential zen of blasting stuffing inside the bears at a Build-A-Bear Workshop.
The Tenth Doctor Who bear deluxe gift set comes with his suit, pants, and glasses, along with his sonic screwdriver and red canvas high-tops. No deluxe Build-A-Bear Doctor Who gift set would be complete without a TARDIS gift box. The gift set will set you back $71.
The Thirteenth Doctor bear deluxe gift set comes with her signature hoodie, rainbow striped top, suspenders, and “Bearland Boot.” She also comes with her sonic screwdriver. Like the Tenth Doctor, the current incarnation of the Doctor comes in a TARDIS gift box if you order the deluxe set or buy it separately for $4. The Thirteenth Doctor gift set clocks in a buck cheaper at $70.
I wonder how many Build-A-Bear plushies can fit in a TARDIS gift box? If I order both Doctor Who bears, do they get shipped in one gift box, or would that break space-time?
The Build-A-Bear Workshop website gives the option of adding a sound or scent to the Doctor Who bears. The buttons aren’t working yet so we’ve no idea if the options are Doctor Who themed. It would be terrific if we can get the bears with a related catchphrase for each doctor. What would the scents be like? What exactly does David Tennant smell like?
Here is yet another reason for adding the Fourth Doctor to the Build-A-Bear Doctor Who line. He could come with the option of adding a Jelly Baby scent and his catchphrase “Would you like a Jelly Baby?”
Build-A-Bear seems to be realizing that adult fans have money and will spend it on themselves. LEGO realized this years ago. That’s probably why this is an online exclusive since Doctor Who themed merch probably won’t do as well as other kid-related brands in the stores. Don’t get me wrong, there are loads of kids into Doctor Who. I started watching it when I was about 8 years old.
Don’t forget that Build-A-Bear Workshop is bringing Baby Yoda (aka The Child) to stores in the next couple months. If they are going to keep making sci-fi/fantasy fan favorite plushies, it might just be time to join the Build-A-Bear Bonus Club.
