The Marvel superhero horror film The New Mutants just dropped a new TV spot on Twitter. The 30-second ad features a lot of action sequences in a short amount of time. If the movie itself delivers loads of action along with spine-tingling horror, this could be a much-needed hit for the newly reformed 20th Century Studios after the purchase by Disney.

We don’t learn anything more in the new TV spot than we already learned from previous trailers. The premise is not overly complicated, which is fine by us. There are way too many convoluted movies. What the new TV spot reveals is 20th Century is still planning to hit the planned August 28 theatrical release date.
This is curious since most theaters in the United States are closed and unlikely to reopen en masse before the end of August. Since 20th Century is now part of the Disney family of companies, you would think the studio would follow similar film releases and go straight to digital rental or the Disney+ platform (or both like Mulan).
IT’S 2020 SO WHO KNOWS
In 2020, there is no sense of normalcy and things can change on a dime, so the studio might decide to send The New Mutants to digital rental platforms. It’s unlikely that Disney would drop it in Disney+ since it is a horror film, which doesn’t exactly fit in with the family-friendly programming. While Disney+ has other X-Men movies on the service, they’re not the scare-you-out-of-your-pants variety.
Whether it’s straight-to-video or a theatrical release (or both), we’re definitely going to see The New Mutants. Based on the Marvel comic first published in September 1982 as an offshoot of the X-Men series, the film adaption looks promising. Written and directed by Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars), the film brings together an interesting group of young actors for the main roles:
- Maisie Williams as Wolfsbane
- Anya Taylor-Joy as Magik
- Charlie Heaton as Sam Guthrie
- Blu Hunt as Mirage
- Henry Zaga as Sunspot
The New Mutants also stars sci-fi actor Alice Braga (Repo Men, Predators, The Rite, Elysium).
This film was planned as the first of a trilogy, but since Disney purchase 20th Century Fox and acquired the characters, that might not be happening.
X-MEN MOVIES ON DISNEY+
As mentioned above, the X-Men films are now on Disney+ released as part of their Summer Movie Nights promotion. The final X-Men movie to come to Disney+ is The Wolverine, which will premiere on Friday, Sept. 4. All the other X-Men films are available on the Disney streaming service.
